About the Maritime Heritage Centre
The Maritime Heritage Centre (MHC) in Campbell River is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich maritime history of the West Coast. Opened in 2004 through a community-driven effort, the Centre houses the BCP 45, a Nationally Recognized Historic Monument, alongside engaging exhibits that highlight local marine heritage. Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated, detail oriented and dynamic student to join our team for Summer 2025 as a Program Assistant. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in museum programming, and visitor services while actively contributing to the preservation and promotion of Campbell River’s maritime heritage.
- Position: Museum Program Assistant
- Duration: Up to 16 weeks (dependent on grant funding)
- Hours: 35 hours per week (may be reduced if funding is not received)
- Wage: $19/hour
- Start Date: Summer 2025 (exact dates dependent on funding)
Key Responsibilities
- Program and Event Support
- Assist in organizing and delivering special events, including speaker series, workshops, and seasonal celebrations.
- Set up and take down event materials, ensuring smooth logistics and a welcoming environment for participants.
- Support the development and facilitation of educational programs aimed at school groups, families, and general audiences.
- Guided Tours
- Lead interactive and informative tours of the BCP 45 and other exhibits, sharing historical and cultural significance.
- Adapt tour content to suit diverse audiences, including children, seniors, and special interest groups.
- Marketing Assistance
- Help create and share engaging content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram) to promote programs and events.
- Assist in updating the Centre’s website and designing promotional materials such as posters, flyers, and newsletters.
- General Support and Learning Opportunities
- Participate in staff training to develop knowledge of the Centre’s operations, exhibits, and customer service practices.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for visitors.
- Gain valuable experience in museum operations, heritage preservation, and community engagement.
- Cashier Duties
- Operate the front desk, processing admissions, gift sales, and event bookings.
- Provide excellent customer service by welcoming guests and answering inquiries.
- Maintain accurate financial records for daily transactions.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible under the grant funding, applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.*
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.**
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
*The employment period is dependent on funding approval.
**International students are not eligible for this position.
