Let’s Talk Engines: An Afternoon with Retired Marine Engineer Bill New

March 13, 2025 2:00 PM

The Maritime Heritage Centre is excited to present “Let’s Talk Engines & Commercial Boats,” a special event featuring retired marine engineer Bill New. This interactive discussion will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Maritime Heritage Centre.

Bill New brings a lifetime of maritime expertise to this event. A retired (old-school) engineer and former owner/operator of Coast Ferries Co. Ltd. and Coast Towing Co. Ltd., Bill’s family launched the company in 1937, providing essential marine freight services along the BC Coast for sixty years. Coast Ferries served over 150 isolated communities, from Howe Sound to Rivers Inlet, Namu, Ocean Falls, Shearwater, Bella Bella, and Klemtu, until its closure in 1997. With decades of experience in marine engineering and operations, Bill will share his deep knowledge of engines and maritime technology.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in lively discussions about everything from commercial boat engines to large marine power systems.

“This event offers a rare chance to hear from a marine engineer with a lifetime of hands-on experience,” said Erika Anderson, Executive Director at the Maritime Heritage Centre. “Whether you’re a boating enthusiast, mechanically inclined, or simply curious about how engines work, this is an afternoon you won’t want to miss.”
